Over-Reacting to Generals

Mirza Aslam Baig, Asad Durrani and Hamid Gul have sizeable contribution to the defence of Pakistan. Have they been found guilty of tempering with politics? Was it to become Prime Ministers and Presidents themselves? Or to save the country from politicians who are a security threat to the state? Because unfortunately, in our country, a big chunk of votes comes from poverty-stricken and harassed villagers whose Chaudhri is sold out. It is he who tells the poor villagers who to vote for if they want a share in the harvest for the coming year. They also vote by ethnic association; a Sindhi prefers to vote for a Sindhi. They also vote by legendary association. I once asked a PPP voter why he voted for PPP. He said, ‘Benazir’s father was an inspirational man’. But he is no more alive? But worst of all is this one; I once asked a PPP voter why she voted for PPP? She said, ‘Benazir Bhutto is pretty looking’. Confounded silence. While majority of the educated stay at home and do not vote out of sheer distrust in the whole system. It is ironical that the PPP is so gleeful about the Asghar Khan case result and some of their officials have gone as far as saying that the culprits should be ‘hanged’ in public under Article 6. Sir, do you forget Article 6 for Musharraf, Shakeel Afridi and Hussain Haqqani? Do not over-react. I feel very sorry that the three named Generals used money to achieve objects but I have no doubt that their intention was creating a firewall against corrupt politicians.
